Senior High Mission Trip: “View That Holy City”
Emmaus House
Atlanta, GA
June 27-July 5, 2008

What is Emmaus House? It’s a parish of the Diocese of Atlanta. It’s an inner-city mission center that seeks to fight poverty and its destructive social consequences. It’s a place where people of all races and economic backgrounds are brought together by the love of God. It’s the place we’re going this summer! Learn more about Emmaus House here

Emmaus House was founded in the midst of the civil rights movement and one of its central commitments has always been racial reconciliation. Here at Ascension that’s a theme that is really important to us as a multiethnic congregation. As part of the mission trip we’ll be focusing on learning about the civil rights movement, making pilgrimages to some of its important sites, and thinking together about how that impacts us today in our lives.

So what are we going to be doing during the week? Some handy-work type projects around the grounds and facilities of Emmaus House (so we can use our strong muscles!). Some type of helping with the summer camp for neighborhood children. Some work serving lunches in the Poverty Rights Office. And of course, tons of learning and fun around Atlanta.

Here are some other things we plan on doing during the week:

The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis (halfway to Atlanta)

Go to a Braves game (walking distance from Emmaus House)

Visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center

and, of course, watching the 4th of July fireworks together

Check back for updates on how the trip plans are coming together … more soon! And why not go ahead and register for the trip?

I don’t think I have the patience to sit through a whole baseball game, the rest sounds fun though. I guess I’ll have to put Paul’s “Love is Patient, love is kind…” words to the test.
